UNHRC |
UNHRC, The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.
Agenda: Ensuring the rights of ethnic minorities
. Throughout history, ethnic minorities, a group of people who have a different ethnic identity from the dominant group, have been targets of discrimination and persecution. Thus the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities in 1992. Its key provisions include that everyone has the right to enjoy own culture, to profess and practice own religion, and to use own language freely and without interference or any form of discrimination.
Sadly, numerous cases of conflicts, discriminations, persecutions and even cleansings based on ethnic groups still show that the rights of minorities are still easily neglected in some parts of the world. At the moment, countries like China and Myanmar are publicly persecuting ethnic minorities. Their freedom, culture, and even lives are in grave danger.
In UNHRC, delegates may discuss the threats some ethnic minorities are facing and the way to enhance and ensure their human rights.
